I’m against a large number of frivolous laws, most easily observed in traffic law, that employ relatively small (below 1000 euros) fines to try and ‘fix’ the mindset of the people. If the money goes to ‘fixing’ externalities, sure, but that almost never happends.

Most importantly, the police hypocritically break these laws all the time and never suffer for it. The problem with this is simple: The people ‘in the know’ are not confronted with how often common sense clashes with such laws.

Of course, there is a workable alternative: This cop wrote himself a ticket. This guy really gets the whole ’setting a good example’ business. If all cops did that, the whole notion of traffic fines would become a lot more palatable!

Here’s an article on a village in Kenya where just about every girl, from 10 and up, has at least one child already.

And it’s not just Kenya; most of the african nations (and pretty much all of the ones considered ‘poor’) have a culture which is totally incapable of stemming their flow of newborns. This has two major effects:

• 1. AIDS and especially other STDs are rampant, and
• 2. The population dynamic exceeds capacity.

I’ll explain that second one in a minute, but just so that you know where this is going: If you save one human in such a country, you kill another, period. Cure malaria? 5 years down the line there will be a bloody civil war. Build a water pump? Every life saved by it advances the clock on the next massive famine, epidemic, war, or dictatorial killing spree.

Whoa.

I better back that up. To start with, I’ll explain that population dynamics thing. Imagine, for a moment, a country with no high rise buildings, but with enough population to cover every inch of the land with human. Obviously, that can’t possibly work. What would happen in such a country? Well, people are going to die. This death can come in many forms; from AIDS, to starvation, to starting wars with other countries, to civil war, to engendering a dictator that kills off massive amounts of the population just to keep it in check. It doesn’t really matter how you twist or turn it; people are going to die.

That’s a nasty realization. Now, obviously, I exaggerate when I say that every square inch of this hypothetical country has a human on it, but, for any given country’s economic power, there’s only so many humans that can be supported by it. At some point, a country crosses the line - and people will die, one way or another. It has to happen.

How’s this work in e.g. europe or america? It’s really quite simple: Population growth is checked. Every tiny increase in economic power isn’t instantly filled up by another population boom; far from it, in fact. Lots of countries in Europe have stagnating population, in fact.

Lots of cultures in Africa have their opinions and ideas about sex completely screwed up. These are the people that think that having unprotected sex with a virgin cures AIDS, while condoms cause it. These are also the people that badger europeans all day long and give you tons of trouble unless you travel as a married couple (I know plenty of backpacking boy and girlfriends that buy fake wedding rings when heading into the depths of africa and some other generally poor countries, just to stop the whining, leering, and frankly, the chance of rape) - yet at the same time have the largest prostitution industries per capita of the world. This isn’t a slight against those countries; europe and america until very recently had the exact same fucked up mentality, and large parts of the population still do.

But it needs to change. It has to change. It’s one of the factors that are causing such countries to produce more babies than it can economically handle.

Making the economy better doesn’t help at all - the population growth is so huge that it can more than easily keep up with economic growth; once the kettle boils over, nature must balance the problem and usually the way it happends is devastating for the world and for the country: War, Famine, Murdering dictator, Epidemic, or just an enormous death rate, by way of general poor health and boatloads of crime. Take war for example: the country probably gets bombed back to the stone age. Kiss your economic growth g’bye along with the nice roads, bridges, etcetera. Even a dictator is a bad deal (stifles economic growth considerably, and a dictator that fears a coupe d’etat doesn’t usually worry much about such mundane things as spending money to keep the road system in order), economically.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the endless population boom syndrome. They need to fixed, and only these things need to be fixed. Any other aid is money thrown down the drain moving that country ever closer to its own personal armageddon. You’re actively hurting these people by spending your money. You really should be punched in the face. STOP IT.

The factors:

• culture - abortion and anti-contraceptives are okay. Rape is not okay. Reports of rape are to be taken seriously. sex ed is to be taken seriously. Preaching the virtue of waiting until marriage is a fine way to get a significant part of the male population (the ones with very poor impulse control) to start raping.
• financial stability - if there’s no bank you can trust, the only way you can secure a pension and other aspects of ’social security’ is by having a boatload of kids and relying on family ties. You can’t forego the kids and use the money thus saved to build up a future, because the next dictator might take it all away soon enough. This is also true with children, but it’s a lot simpler and you spread your chances.

These aren’t simple factors to fix. For example, there is overwhelming historical and contemporary evidence that poor people tend to be more religious. It seems reasonable to assume that being poor makes it easier to accept religion, possibly as a means to ease your troubles. Unfortunately, the major religions of the world (read: the abrahmic religions) have their head firmly inserted up their ass in regards to sexual culture. So, to fix the vicious cycle of poverty, you need to break through religion, which is best done by… moving a country out of poverty. Bad case of chicken and egg. Those attempts to hand out goodies in exchange for getting a vasectomy seem to be a promising route. Morally a bit shaky, but compared to the alternative (of war, famine, murderous dictator, or epidemic), it wins by miles.

Financial Stability seems easier to tackle: Western countries can run banks and guarantee stability. If a dictator threatens to seize assets, there need to be UN statutes in place that FORCE military intervention, even if only to keep the banks running. More importantly, western countries must offer ways of financial ability and stop pulling the rug out from other african export products. This means letting go of the massive subsidies on products.

Here’s a good idea: Give all your charity to rich western farmers, and then lobby the governments to completely and utterly stop subsidising such things whilst dropping all tariffs for import. That’ll be a fraction of the cost of what gets spent on charity (by individuals and governments alike), there’s more than enough left to buy everyone in the west hurt by the lack of economic protection an extremely royal salary for sitting on their ass, and it gives real economic incentive for growth, instead of handing out presents to those people who manage to play the political game the best (usually very shitty dictators).

Unfortunately, while financial stability is possible, the western world seems completely unphased by it: Charity overwhelmingly doesn’t go to any attempts to sort this out.

I want a charity that spends every last dime on handing out condoms, giving away money in exchange for getting your pipes snipped, and another charity that runs reliable banks and spends the money on hiring a tonne of mercenaries to protect them. THOSE would be worth spending millions on.

Friendly warning to friends and family: If you’ve given money to charity, unless you can make a very well supported case that it’ll reduce the population pressure in a country that needs it, don’t tell me or risk me getting mad and ruining your feel-good buzz.

UPDATE: Re-reading this article I think I under-represented the problem of how incredibly ineffective (insofar as going backwards) a ‘gift giving’ system is (which is what charity usually amounts to). The world just wasn’t meant to work this way. Fortunately, I just found an article that explains the problem with a use case: The story of the free waterpump. Note by the way, that the next village down the road is getting jealous…

Hier een artikel van Management Pro over de (gesuggereerde) negatieve smaak in ’s werelds hoogopgeleide vluchtelingen.

Dit is een heel zwaar probleem. Nederland heeft relatief weinig resources en is toch een zeer hoog luxe niveau gewend, en dus moet er quantitatief veel and qualitatief hoge kennis ‘gexporteerd’ worden. Een stapel hoogopgeleide allochtonen met entrepreneur trekjes helpt daar heel goed bij, en ik zie ze graag.

Toch stem ik VVD. Ik stem zelfs Rita Verdonk. Want: Dit is geen simpel probleem.

Het management pro artikel maakt een aantal assumpties die ik in twijfel trek:

Ten eerste: de HUIDIGE politiek is niet verantwoordelijk voor dit probleem. Voor dezelfde redenen dat miljoenen nederlanders nog steeds stelselmatig te hard rijden ondanks dat ze boetes krijgen aan de lopende band, kun je niet zomaar even een wet aanmaken met ‘alle buitenlanders zijn lief en dienen fijn geaccepteerd te worden!’ - dat heb je gewoon niet in de hand. Een nederlander (onafhankelijk van cultuur achtergrond) kijkt graag naar iemand’s abilities en potentieel, of ze kijken graag naar iemands huidskleur. Daar gaat een wet helemaal niets aan veranderen.

Het is dan ook mijn opinie dat een eventuele teneergang van nederland als plaats om neer te strijken als vluchteling-met-pit niet zoveel te maken heeft met het immigratie beleid van nu. Het zal veel meer te maken hebben met verhalen dat de gemiddelde nederlander je zo de straat uitkijkt.

DAT probleem oplossen is andere koek, en grapjes als het vrijstellen van de 26,000 gezichten lui maakt dat alleen maar erger. Ik wil hier niet mee zeggen dat je dus vooral groffer moet optreden omdat er wat mutsen in nederland rondwandelen met KKK-aspiraties; ik wil alleen maar stellen dat een land waar X% lichtelijk discrimineert een land is waar een gewilde vluchteling echt niet heen gaat, boeien wetgeving.

Volgend probleem: Volgens het artikel:

Vluchtelingen krijgen tegenwoordig namelijk onvoldoende kans om aan werk te komen, want werkgevers zijn - niet door de minste politici - bang gemaakt voor allochtonen en hun problemen.

Daar heeft de politiek toch geen ene snars mee te maken? Zit de politiek reclamefilmpjes uit te zenden met: Pas op jongens, want die marokaan daar op de hoek, die weet waar je huis woont, jongen! Wegwezen!? Tuurlijk niet. Je kan hoog of laag gaan staan, maar de statistiek liegt er niet om, en het is zeer zeer lastig om de mens’ natuurlijk drang om patronen te zien tegengaan.

Er is een soortement van ‘economische sweetspot’ voor een gegeven immigrant: Een bepaalde hoeveelheid productiviteit. Daarop of daarboven wil je hem of haar graag het land in hebben. Echter, een immigrant die voor wat voor reden dan ook aan het jatten slaat of gezellig van een uitkerinkje gaat genieten terwijl hij een hele uitgebreide familie overhaalt, is funest voor het hele systeem. Niet zozeer voor de duidelijke reden, maar vooral ook omdat het een wrange nasmaak achterlaat bij diegenen die het zien gebeuren. De hardwerkende middenstander die de helft van het zuurverdiende geld waar ze 12 uur per dag voor hebben gezwoegd met de noorderzon ziet vertrekken en vervolgens een uurtje gaan vloeken jegens het hoofd van een Bos of een Marijnissen die insinueert dat ze kil en harteloos zijn. Het gaat er niet zo zeer om dat algehele overheidsverspilling bij verre de grootste factor is en niet zozeer uitkeringen voor asielzoekers. De mens is de mens, en ik zou het graag veranderen, maar zo is het nou eenmaal.

Maar ja, waar zit die oplossing nou? Je kan moeilijk alle allochtonen maar buiten het land houden omdat teveel nederlanders racistische trekjes beginnen te vormen, dat is het karretje voor het paard spannen, slaat nergens op.

Rock and a hard place dus, en dat is het grote probleem. Veel van de kleine groep die het verzieken zijn al nederlander dus al die reactionaire regelingetjes treffen niet die lui die je zou willen. Het idee van een sociaal contract (Ja, we geven je onderdak, maar als je je niet gedraagt dan vlieg je er uit, onder het motto: Als het alternatief neergeknalt worden is in het land waar je vandaan komt ga je echt niet een winkel bejatten), even buiten of dat nou gaat werken en/of humaan is, lost niet zo heel veel op, zelfs als je het voordeel van de twijfel geeft aan zoiets - veel probleemgevallen hebben al de status van nederlander verworven. De kop-in-het-zand mentaliteit van kabinetten van vroeger hebben ons dit probleem meegegeven. Geschiedenis kun je niet veranderen.

Nog geen reden om dan maar het handdoekje in de ring te gooien en nu dus maar de grenzen wijd open te gooien.

Het lijkt me bijvoorbeeld een goed idee om een dubbele regeling in te voeren: Je bent vluchteling, of gast. Als een bedrijf je vraagt hier te komen, is het van de pot af gepleurt dat je perse nederlands moet leren. Maar in diezelfde trend is het ook dubieus dat je hier op de knieen komt voor onderdak, je dat dan krijgt, en je vervolgens als een hork gedraagt. De financiele schade valt nog mee te leven, maar die go-getter van next-door is er wel de dupe van op straat, en dat is niet eerlijk.

Het verhaal van Navid Otaredian op Management Pro is aandoenlijk en ik leef met hem mee. Het is dus ook jammer om te zien dat zijn (blijkelijk nogal linkse inslag) om aan dit probleem te werken compleet niet samenvalt met de partijen waarvan ik verwacht dat ze het beter kunnen doen.

De oplossing? Ik weet het gewoonweg niet. Echt niet. Dit is een Probleem met een hoofdletter P en ik zie geen enkele politieke partij die echt met een overweldigend goed idee komt. Ik kan alleen zeggen dat de bleeding heart approach ook slachtoffers maakt, ze zijn alleen wat minder direct gekoppeld. Desalniettemin is Mr. Otaredian mooi de lul en dat is niet fair voor hem, en niet fair voor nederland.

Ik wil wel een ideetje opperen: Welke idioot ooit dacht dat het een goed plan was om wijken op te stellen waar mensen van hoofdzakelijk dezelfde cultuur heen worden gesluist, schande! Laten we in ieder geval dat niet meer doen. Een ding dat ik me kan voorstellen is het nog verder verbeteren (het bestaat nu al, voornamelijk voor hoger opgeleiden) van hulp bij het vinden van een huis voor alle immigranten, en zoveel mogelijk vermijden dat je “X-buurten” krijgt (vul cultuur-scheldwoord-du-jour in voor X). Helaas is de extremistischer wordende houding juist een reden om dan maar veel op te trekken met cultuurgenoten. Dat is jammer, want ‘melting pot’ werkt alleen als er ook echt gemixt wordt.

Nog een laatste gedachtenspinsel voor die lui die me raar aankijken over mijn stem (je weet wie je bent!): Ik vind het bijzonder beledigend dat ik aan word gevallen als harteloos en racistisch, alleen maar omdat ik denk dat de oppervlakkige plannen van de linkse politiek volgens mij niet gaan werken. 1.2 miljoen nederlanders (wilders + verdonk) meteen afdoen als racistische idioten is knap lullig jegens de miljoenen mensen die de dupe zijn van de echte klootzakken (puntmutsen en hakenkruizen), en het lost helemaal niks op - terwijl we juist oplossingen nodig hebben.

Two excellent pieces of news for you, my dear friends, readers, and random stumblers!

Today I have received word that I am, indeed, getting my engineering degree - &it’s been confirmed.

Another interesting piece of news:

You may remember my clash with the justice system regarding running a red light that I’m certain I never did.

The result of my challenge is in - I’m off the hook. The Officer of Justice in charge of the case agreed with my complaint that stuffing me with the responsibility for proving I didn’t do it 6 months after the fact is a farce of justice and a ridiculous way to treat your citizens.

In other news I lost a whole 3 bucks at poker yesterday, but I guess not having to pay 160 for a bunk traffic ticket makes that a fairly inconsquential event.

The traffic fine money machine is friendly and courteous on the phone0

As many of my friends know, I’m not entirely happy with the dutch sanctions system for minor traffic infractions.

One of the problems I have with the system is the notification: It comes with sparse information, months after the infraction, by standard postal mail. Which can get lost and has no actual guarantee.

Turns out some camera appears to have been misconfigured as I received notice I ran a red light. It’s at zuidwal, which has seen major construction work done, which might be part of the problem.

Unfortunately, the notice I received was a notice of raising the fine because I didn’t pay before the deadline. I never received the original notice though. The failure of not requiring signature at the door for receiving it shows its ugly head. Worse, this version has no information whatsoever about what to do to at least get the picture, and there’s a deadline on challenging the fine.

So, I called up the CJIB, the central organization that takes care of foisting a billion euros of fines on the dutch populace every year. They were actually quite friendly, and, get this, their policy on missing letters is this:

no problem, we’ll just send you a new one and start the whole process from scratch - revert the fine to the original amount, reset your 6 weeks of challenge time, the works.

Because they are 3 to 4 weeks worth behind on correspondence (apparently, few of those billion bucks a year are going into the CJIB itself), the second ‘first notice’ will arrive well after the deadline for this second notice has ran out. After the second you get a very pricey third, and after that, I’m not sure what’ll happen. I guess they’ll go and impound something or other. She did warn me to keep placing lots of calls to make sure that doesn’t happen (oh great, that makes me feel safe) but basically my simple telephone call has put the whole process on indefinite hold until they resend that first notice.

Well, that’s certainly a creative way to avoid paying some fairly serious money to the post office for getting signed delivery of notices. I wonder how long that will remain an effective tactic if everyone and their uncle knows about it, but given the history of fines in the Netherlands, turns out the vast majority consider it a sort of shadow road tax and just pay it up without either learning any lessons (difficult if you disagree with the fine + don’t know when the heck that happend + don’t get a picture) or taking too much trouble to try and get the whole thing wiped clean. The fact that the dutch system does not bother with ‘points’ on a driving licence that could lead to losing it for too many minor infractions also doesn’t help motivate people to challenge their fines.

The upshot being a significant boost to the national budget stemming from traffic fines. But that’s neither here nor there in this discussion. I’ll keep you posted about my further exploits in trying to get this thing set to rights.

I did the graphics, Alper made a widget before so he supplied the know-how. Not that it’s difficult or anything. He also added the brilliant sound-effect.
